A Conversation With Chef Lovejones

I recently had the wonderful pleasure and honor of sitting down with one of West Coast's exquisite chef's. This man is simply amazing in every essence of the word from the way he speaks, gets dressed, prepares food, and navigates throughout the city from day to day. And trust, his way of styling and presenting delicatessens is filled with an enormous amount of love. I introduce to you, Chef Rodney Lovejones. I asked Rodney a series of questions that related to the spectacular world of culinary arts. He offered answers that left me smiling when the conversation ended.

TSM: What inspired you to become a chef?

CL: My grandfather Samuel William Jones. He was a maverick man. He wore a suit to work everyday. He found pleasure in and enjoyed the taste of great food. Also, one of my influences was Joelle Nash, the former food editor of Essence magazine.

TSM: What's the first thing that you cooked?

CL: The first thing I cooked was a pound cake. I was a little apprehensive because I didn't know how much vanilla to use. So, I actually decided to use rum. As a result, I decided to make my own vanilla by using different liqueurs. It was my own twist on pound cake. Since then, I've gone on to make all sorts of pastries.

TSM:  Is there any particular dish, food or entree that you like to prepare more than others?

CL: Actually no. However, what I like to plate most are pastas. There not my favorite to cook. They just look really great when prepared with stir fry veggies.

TSM: How would you say food relates to style?

CL: Currently I create gluten and soy free recipes which contribute to a healthy diet and lifestyle. These types of foods are ones than can be prepared beautifully. This within itself is a representation of style that speaks on many levels. It's very health conscious.

TSM:  When you hear the word maverick, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

CL:  Power of style. I think a maverick man is one who is fearless and doesn't make any apologies for his style. He is one that brings a powerful sense of style to whatever it may be.

TSM: Well, there you have it. This has been such a wonderful maverick moment. Be on the lookout for this extraordinary chef. And, be sure to stop by his restaurant 2Good2B if you're ever in the west coast area.

Maverick Fit Men

Summer time is here and guys we all know what that means. It's time to hit the gym, take a few laps around the park, and change your eating habits to healthy ones. I'm making it an of aim of mine to do this the entire summer and to continue once the warmer season ends. Oftentimes, we put off what we can do today for tomorrow. I beseech every Maverick Men to practice living a healthy lifestyle. It's imperative that we invest in our health just like we invest our money into things that matter most to us. Furthermore, being fit is simply another way of representing style in your own personal way. Here are a three easy tips to get you started:

1. Exercise regularly three to four times a week for at least 30 minutes a day. Cardio workout is always good and necessary. It helps to keep the blood flowing and heart beating regularly. Consider push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, and squats. All of these exercises help to keep the body toned. Furthermore, these exercises will keep you in shape if you stay the course.

2. Make sure to get your zzzz's. Health Experts recommend seven to eight hours of sleep a day. If you do this it can help decrease stress, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Guys it even helps enhance your sex life and provides great endurance. I think every man would love and could use more sleep.

3. Eat healthy. That requires eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies. This will require cutting back on your salt and sugar intake. It may even require minimizing your food portions. Doing this can help with issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, weight and obesity.

Guys if you keep these simple health tips in mind you will live a long maverick life.

Music Exemplifies Style

Anyone who knows me knows that I have such a love for music. It doesn't matter if it's classical, country, jazz, rhythm & blues or pop. All of it has meaning and when I hear the lyrics it makes me move.  In fact, music plays several roles in all of our lives as men on a day to day basis. It calms us, makes us happy, energizes us and inspires us. However, one of the main roles it particularly plays in my daily life and my routine is by way of style. I decided to focus on a few of my favorite musical genuises that have influenced the way I execute my sense of style on many different levels. I'm sure you're probably wondering who they are. Well, let the role call begin starting with Sammy Davis Jr., Marvin Gaye, and Frank Sinatra. In my opinion, these were some of the most maverick men of there time. So, I decided to pay homage to them. Take a look at how these musically inclined men exemplified what true style was to them not just through their music, but even in their style of dress. Guys I dare to say these men still influence many of our looks today from hair to wardrobe even down to the accessories we wear. I think every maverick man could look and learn a lesson or two from these musically inclined oh so fab men.

What is Subtlety...are you?

Maverick men when you hear the word subtlety, what's the first thought that comes to mind? The first thought that comes to my mind is minimal. According to Webster's Dictionary subtlety is defined as a small detail that is usually important but not obvious. If you were to ask Kara Walker the enfamous contemporary African-American artist she would probably tell you to take a trip to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. There has been a buzz in the air about an incredible exhibit by Kara Walker called  "A Subtlety" that has everyone talking. So, I decided to take the subway and go on a journey to Brooklyn's legendary Domino Sugar Factory to see what it was all about. I'm so glad I did. I was completely enamored by all of the amazing artifacts that were created and sculpted by sugar. Yes you read it correctly...sugar. The artist decided that she would pay homage to the unpaid as well as overworked Artisans who have refined our sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World through her artwork. Take a look at these photos that I captured. You will be amazed by what you see. If you don't know who Kara Walker is I encourage every maverick man with an appreciation for art to look her up. You will instantly fall in love with her work. Walker conveys her work through race, gender, sexuality, violence and identity.

Maverick Men Always Travel In Style

Gentlemen have you ever thought about the way you travel? In fact, have you ever thought about the luggage you use to carry your garments as well as toiletries in? Well, it's time that you start thinking about the type of garment bag, duffle bag, suitcase, and dopp kit that you commute with. Perhaps, you're asking yourself does the luggage I carry really matter. The answer to that question is YES!  One cannot be a man of style dressed impeccably from head to toe and carry cheap luggage while traveling. As a maverick man, the investment you make in the luggage you carry is just as important as the clothes inside. There are just a few things to take into consideration.

1. The better the leather the better the quality will be, which means it will be very durable. Therefore, it's not easily scratched, cracked, destroyed, nor damaged.

2. The bigger the investment that you make, the longer the luggage will endure. Always remember, quality over quantity is essential.

3. Consider how often you travel whether nationally or internationally. This can also help with choosing the right size luggage. You certainly don't want your luggage to be heavy nor bigger than you. That's never a good luck.

4. You should only carry luggage that makes a statement. It is a representation of who you are. Its a great way to show your level of taste.

If you keep these tips in mind you will be well on your way to your destination. Get ready for take off.

Living in Style

image-14.jpg

Gentlemen do you know that style extends beyond the clothes that you wear?

Perhaps some of you may know while their are others that do not know. Well, I want to take a minute or two to teach you. Style is executed on many different levels such as where and how one lives, the places one travels to as well as the foods you eat and even down to the music that you listen to. I had the wonderful privilege of taking a trip down south to Georgia a few months ago. Take a look at where I lounged. It was quite lavish and relaxing. This is definitely an example that you can live comfortably in style as well be an ultimate man of style...
